The SAGCOT Greenprint: A "Green Growth" Investment Blueprint

The SAGCOT Greenprint presents a “Green Growth” investment framework for achieving productive, sustainable agricultural development throughout Tanzania’s Southern Corridor. Recognizing that the ambitious goals of SAGCOT cannot be met without careful attention to the management of land, water, soils, forests, biodiversity, and climate change, the Greenprint proposes a set of “Agriculture Green Growth” (AGG) strategies that will increase yields, increase crop production per unit input, reduce waste and pollution, increase farm profitability, and conserve the natural resource base upon which agriculture depends. By using land and water more efficiently, agricultural development under AGG will be more compatible with growth in other sectors, and will reduce the potential for stakeholder conflict. To mainstream AGG across the Southern Corridor, the Greenprint proposes a set of supportive policies and partnerships including new programs to catalyze innovation and investment in the smallholder sector as well as effective, transparent processes for planning and investment generation. If implemented over the next 20 years, the Greenprint strategy is expected to increase food production in the Southern Corridor by more than 2.2 million tons per year while reducing deforestation, water use, and net greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional agricultural development trajectory. Taken together, the SAGCOT Greenprint and the previously-developed Blueprint define a practical strategy and an attainable investment program to tackle the challenges of food security, poverty, environmental degradation, and climate change in southern Tanzania.

SAGCOT: Private Sector Investment Opportunities

As part of the SAGCOT initiative and in order to attract the private capital and know-how needed to fix critical links in the value chains, the Government of Tanzania is working to attract strategic private investment partners that will work with smallholders to achieve the SAGCOT objectives of reducing poverty and enhancing food security and exports. A series of dedicated working groups were launched to identify private investment partners in strategic agribusiness sectors, inform them of the investment opportunities, and prepare and facilitate investments that will contribute to the SAGCOT objectives. A first set of 3 presentations were prepared for potential investors in the livestock, rice and sugar sectors.
